I have a question for you today, and the answer may not be what you think. I’ll explain what I mean in a sec, but first, the question:
Why do you want to lose weight?
The knee jerk reaction for most people is because they want to look good for something. High school reunion coming up, exotic beach vacation, or even just wanting to look good for the hubs? All great reasons to look great. And who doesn’t want to look good? Sign me up, baby, I love that idea!
The problem with wanting to lose weight to look good is that it isn’t a good enough reason.
It’s a good reason at the beginning, and most people can get a few pounds off with this as their motivation. But sustaining that momentum? That takes something else, something deeper.
What does a healthy life look like to you?
Even better motivation than just looking good is what a healthy life actually looks like to you. This is a motivation that actually lasts, even through the hard times when the ice cream in the freezer is calling your name.
Let me give you an example of what I mean. For me, a healthy life looks like delicious family dinners with my kids. It looks like family hikes. It looks like vacations where we swim and sight-see and play with each other because we have energy to do so. My healthy life is free of sickness, at least the long-lasting, debilitating kind. It is a life full of quiet moments with the ones I love, playful moments, excited moments, and even the sad moments. It is love and experiences and adventures, without illness getting in the way. And woven through it all is lots of delicious, fresh, nourishing food, shared with the people we love.
What about you? What things could you do if you were healthier? What opportunities are you missing because of the food you eat? What adventures are you putting off to another day because you are too tired to do more than just sit on the couch?
Yes, of course you want to look good in that bikini. But what is the real reason to grab onto health with both hands and never let go?
If you are ready for that change but not sure where to begin, take action right now and shoot me an email at Emily@thatswhatieat.com. Let’s have an initial, FREE, Discovery Session, where you tell me your health goals and I give you strategies to get you there. The session lasts about 45 minutes, and we meet either by phone or Skype, whichever is more convenient for you.
So tell me, why do you want to lose weight?
